Table for 4

Taos
2114 W. Roscoe

The Basics

Where you’ll find it: 2114 W. Roscoe, in Roscoe Village between Hamilton and Hoyne. (773) 248-6899.

When it’s open: Dinner: 5 p.m.-midnight. Brunch: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

Reservations: You may want to make reservations for parties of four or more on the weekend as a precaution, but they are not necessary during the week.

What you’ve heard: Great Southwestern food in a great neighborhood. … A nice new addition to the Roscoe Village restaurant scene.

Visual Aids

First impressions: Nice flat screens. … Warm and cozy interior with a nice bar and great color schemes. … Southwestern decor, vivid color schemes and paintings make it feel like you’re in Arizona or Mexico.

The atmosphere: Comfortable and casual atmosphere. ... The tables against the wall seemed too close together. … Not too busy for a Wednesday in the city. ... It seems that you could easily dress casual (i.e. jeans), or you could go in business-casual/downtown going-out attire as well.

What the manager thinks: “I just love how unique this place is. You can catch corporate suits from local financial offices in here after the work day is over to the most hardcore Brazilian volleyball players and those just swinging by to catch a game on TV and have a bite to eat. The DJ is popular later on the weekends, and Friday nights are worth checking out for sure.”

The Experience

At your service: Our hostess was also our waitress, and she greeted us warmly upon our entrance. … She was knowledgeable in giving us suggestions and was very attentive.

Get your drink on: Their margaritas on the rocks were very refreshing and homemade. Good combination of sweet and sour mix with tequila, and you can’t beat them as the $3 special on Wednesdays.

Menu variety and prices: Not exactly a cheap option for a weekday restaurant, but the food was good quality. Their specialty is Southwestern food, but there are a lot of options that aren’t Mexican. ... It’s got a little bit of everything, not just margaritas and fajitas.

Description of what you did decide on: Nachos with chicken were muy excellente (great combination of cheese, homemade guacamole and chicken) as an appetizer. … The mahi mahi was very tasty with the pineapple salsa as a topper. … Burritos (both steak and chicken) were a little on the dry side and were almost too big to fit into your mouth (fork and knife were a necessity in order to eat them). … The fajitas were sizzling fresh and tasty. … By the time we finished our dinners (around 10:30) and had inquired about the dessert, the waitress told us that their kitchen was closed. That was a big disappointment because there were a few dessert options we would have selected to share among the four of us. We also thought it was odd that the waitress didn't ask us if we were interested in dessert if the kitchen was getting ready to close.

Something that caught your eye: Nice flat screen TVs placed around the restaurant. … Wednesday is open-mic night. … Really nice and clean restrooms. … It had a quaint local restaurant type of feel inside.

What you’ll tell your friends: Great drinks. Two of us have been there a few other times, and every time we’ve been there, whether we’ve had margaritas, mojitos, red wine, white wine, etc., they have always been great. … Highly recommend the fajitas, and the nachos are a “must have.”
